Penguins/Flyers Recap: Pens sloppy again in 5-2 loss – PensBurgh

Period
For a group that went down 3-0, the Pens really started relatively decently against the Flyers. Pittsburgh got called for their second too numerous males call in as many video games this season. The PK was even doing well, but Chad Ruhwedel got called for a journey as it was passing away down, giving the Flyers another fracture at it.

Pregame
The Penguins blend it up from the first game, Cody Ceci sits and Chad Ruhwedel cycles in. D-pairs are adapted to put the best four gamers on the top 2 sets. Novel principle!

2 minutes later, Konecny strikes once again. Tristan Jarry cant keep the puck in front of and spins around backwards (this never works) and the Flyers chip it in. 2-0.

Luckily for the Pens, they turn the tide. After getting their first power play of the game, Sidney Crosby capitalizes it with a backhand goal.

Oskar Lindblom adds an empty netter with 2:08 left to eliminate any doubts and make it 5-2.
Some thoughts
For some reason thats what Jarry advised me about on that 2nd objective, where a weak shot just dripped right through him, and he spun right out of the web for an easy tap in for the Flyers. The Pens arent really strong defensively (cant blame the goalie for a slam dunk one-t from point blank range on the first objective), but their goalie hasnt truly helped the cause, either.
Jankowski finished 2nd in the NHL in 2018-19 with five SHG. Its simple to see why. He hangs onto the puck, takes it into the zone and is simply kinda a treat to see eliminating charges.
Guentzel and Zucker had marvelous possibilities in the second from right in front, just could not cash in. Ditto even Ruhwedel and Evan Rodrigues. Hart was excellent, however the Pens were a bit snakebit too.
The Pens came out very physical. McCann bodychecked Couturier (and Coots would not return after that early shift). Sam Lafferty bloodied Laughton. Tanev was flying around like a maniac as normal securing anything with a pulse. Hits overall in the game were 30-24 Pens.
Letang was on ice for all 5 goals versus. Not great! All of Konecnys objectives were scored from breathing distance of the goalie, too.
DeSmith wasnt asked to do a lot, but he offered some settling play by keeping the puck out of the net for 41 minutes. For what weve seen this season, thats a positive right there.
On the other end, Hart was extremely excellent. Especially because 2nd period, the Pens checked him heavily and he had all the responses. Difficult to take in a brief season, however thats how it goes in some cases.
Opening secrets to the game (from the sneak peek).
# 1: “the Pens need more out of the Malkin line (and more protecting against the Hayes line).”.
50% credit here, I think. The Hayes line didnt do anything, however unfortunately the larger story was once again a peaceful line by Malkin and his line. The Pens arent going to do a lot when that line isnt clicking and it wasnt.
# 2: “How does Jarry recover for the 2nd game?”.
Jarry got bounced after just 11:30 of the video game, seeing just 6 shots but having 3 of them end up behind him. Its fair to debate how much of the blame pie he has to take, however Jarrys enabled 9 goals in 71 minutes this season on a. 758% save%. No one has to be happier to get out of Philly tonight than Tristan Jarry.
# 3: “Win the special teams battle.”.
Cant say the Pens did. Power play went 1/5, OK however had an opportunity for more. PK went 5/6 which was excellent, but provided up another goal quickly after it ended. Going to package six times is also an issue in and of itself, as was taking another too many men call.

Just two minutes later on, the floodgates come open. 3-0 just 11:30 into the video game.

Casey DeSmith, in the game cold, sees Kevin Hayes bear down on him for a breakaway for his first shot in the NHL given that March 16th, 2019. DeSmith stones him. Huge time minute to keep the video game at 3-2.
The Pens get 2 more power plays, but dont do much with it. For shame!
Shots are 14-9 Pittsburgh. 5v5 Corsi% is 54.2% in the Pens edge.
Second period
Sean Couturier left the video game in the first duration and has not returned for the second.
Kris Letang takes a penalty early to negate the power play. Pittsburgh eliminates it off.
John Marino springs Jason Zucker on a clear breakaway however the backhand shot is stopped.
Mike Matheson goes to package for tripping. Tanev takes a slapper straight to the foot but naturally is too difficult to put down and comes back soon.
The Pens get another power play when Scott Laughton slashes Crosby, they do not do a load with it and then McCann goes to the box for a really inexpedient method to protrude his arm and ram his elbow into a Flyers head. Not excellent. All charges cycle through.
Fantastic duration for the Pens, in spite of being on the PK for 5 minutes (to just 1+ on the PP) shots are 10-4 in the 2nd frame for PIT. Overall they are 24-13 PIT. 5v5 CF% for the game is 60% Pens. SCF% and HDSCF% are 56.0% and 57.1%, respectively for Pittsburgh through 2 durations. Everything going good, except they didnt put any past Hart in this duration.
3rd duration.
Very little going on in the third, the Pens get a power play in the middle of the 3rd when Mike Matheson is crushed into the boards from behind. A great deal of quality zone time and takes a look at the internet, however they cant resolve Hart.
The refs even it up by sending out Zucker off for a slash shortly after. The Pens eliminate it off however right after the Flyers get an odd-man rush the other way, make a couple of cross ice passes and Konency mainly fans but still gets enough to put it into the net for a 4-2 lead for his club with just over 7 minutes remaining.

Next shift out, the Pens best line of the season so far strikes. Tanev has an open web to fire it into and its 3-2 with Pittsburgh back engaged and on the resurgence trail.

5v5 Corsi% is 54.2% in the Pens edge. The Pens get another power play when Scott Laughton slashes Crosby, they dont do a load with it and then McCann goes to the box for a very inexpedient method to stick out his arm and ram his elbow into a Flyers head. 5v5 CF% for the game is 60% Pens. Hits in general in the game were 30-24 Pens.
The Pens arent going to do a lot when that line isnt clicking and it wasnt.
